OpenAI recently launched ChatGPT-4o, which is a modified version of the existing ChatGPT-4 model powering its flagship ChatGPT product. OpenAI CTO Mira Murati said in a livestream announcement on Monday that the revamped model “is much faster” and improves “capabilities across text, vision, and audio.”. Here is all you need to know about OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4o:
What is ChatGPT-4o?
OpenAI’s new flagship model GPT-4o is capable of reasoning about audio, vision and text in real time. It has been created with an intent to be freely available to all users.
Available to anyone with an OpenAI API account, the GPT-4o can be used in the Chat Completions API, Assistants API, or Batch API and supports JSON mode and function calls. Additionally, you can also get started with the Playground.
Is ChatGPT-4o free?
According to Murati, the ChatGPT-4o will be free for all users, while paying users will continue to have capacity limits up to five times higher than free users.
In simple words, you don’t require a special subscription to start using the OpenAI GPT-4o model. However, keep in mind that you are rate-limited to fewer prompts per hour as compared to paid users. So be careful what questions you ask the chatbot, otherwise you will run out of your prompts allotment quickly.
In addition to limited access to GPT-4o, non-paying users received a major update to their entire user experience with several features that were previously reserved only for paying customers. The GPT Store, where anyone can publish a version of ChatGPT with custom instructions, is now generally available. Free users can also take advantage of ChatGPT’s web browsing tool and storage capabilities and upload photos and files for the chatbot to analyze.
ChatGPT-4o: What’s new for free users?
Apart from limited GPT-4o access, non-paying users received a major upgrade to their overall user experience, with multiple features that were previously available for paying customers only. The GPT Store is now generally available for all. This is where anyone can publish a version of ChatGPT using custom instructions. Now, free users can not only use ChatGPT’s web-browsing tool but also take advantage of storage capabilities. Furthermore, they can now upload files and photos for GPT-4o to analyze.
How to access ChatGPT-4o in the API?
GPT-4o will initially be available in ChatGPT and API as a text and vision model, OpenAI says. Specifically, it will be available in ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Team, as well as the Chat Completions API, Assistants API, and Batch API.
Free users will be assigned to GPT-4o automatically, while messaging restrictions are subject to change based on demand and current usage. These users will use GPT-3.5 by default in instances where GPT-4o is not available. However, free access imposes limits on advanced communication features including file uploads, discovering and utilising GPTs, vision capabilities, browsing, and data analysis.
GPT-4o in particular offers sophisticated vision capabilities that improve the accuracy of uploaded pictures.
How free users can upgrade to Plus?
If you are a ChatGPT Plus and Team subscriber, you will get access to GPT-4 and GPT-4o on chatgpt.com, with a higher usage cap. Free users can upgrade to Plus anytime. All they need to do first is click on ChatGPT. After successfully paying $5 or more (use tier 1), the GPT-4, GPT-4 Turbo, and GPT-4o models can be accessed via the OpenAI API.
