In a joint statement, the Ministry of Health and Health Sciences Authority (HSA) announced that starting from March 2024, any first-time offenders caught buying, using or possessing e-vaporisers, or vapes in Singaporean schools and institutes of higher learning (IHLs) will face fines of up to S$2,000. This comes in order to ramp up enforcement and education efforts against e-vaporisers, including in schools and institutes.
Enforcement and Education Initiatives
Through this effort, authorities aim to control vaping offences. Since January 1 to March 31 this year, approximately 250 cases of vaping offences were reported to HSA by schools and IHLs.
Collaboration with Ministry of Education (MOE)
According to this regulation, the Ministry of Education will be notified when a student is caught for vaping offences by HSA or other enforcement agencies outside of school premises. While vaping is already illegal in Singapore and now students can be fined upto S$2,000, an MOE spokesperson, revealed that when a student is caught vaping, schools inform their parents, confiscate vaping devices, and implement disciplinary actions.
