Ulu Tiram police station attack: Two Arrested Students Released

Ulu Tiram police station shooting kills two: Suspect linked to Jemaah Islamiyah?

KUALA LUMPUR: Two University students, who were arrested in connection with the investigation in last week’s attack on the Ulu Tiram police station, were released on Wednesday.

Johor police chief Commissioner M Kumar said that the students aged 21 and 22 were released on orders from the chambers of Attorney General, Malay daily Utusan Malaysia reported.

“Two individuals who were arrested last May 17 to assist in the investigation involving a case under Section 302 of the Penal Code were released yesterday after receiving instructions from the Attorney General’s Chambers.”

“However, the investigation against the other five suspects, all of whom are members of the suspect’s family, is still ongoing considering that the remand period will only end on May 24,” he said in a statement.

Two police officers lost their lives in an early morning attack on the Ulu Tiram police station last week, while the suspect was also shot dead by the cops. The police had arrested the two university students in connection with the incident. Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, Inspector-General of Police, had said a male, 22, and a female student, 21, were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the attack.

“They were detained for further investigation related to the attack. It is illogical to report a molest case from two years ago at 2.30am in the morning. Therefore, we will thoroughly investigate these two students,” he had said.

Earlier last week, five members of the suspect’s family were also arrested to help investigate the attack, Bernama reported.

The masked suspect believed to be a 34-year-old local, had stormed the police station under the Seri Alam District Police Headquarters at around 2.45am, wearing a mask.

He then attacked and killed one of the two policemen on duty before snatching the victim’s service weapon and shooting the other cops several times.

The masked man also attacked a third policeman returning from a crime prevention patrol, however, he managed to shoot him.

Police confiscated a Walther P99 pistol and an HK MP5 rifle from the suspect after the incident.
