Ulu Tiram attack: Are Malaysian police stations equipped to handle such assaults?

Two police officers were killed while another was injured after a masked attacker targeted them at the Ulu Tiram police station on Jalan Kota Tinggi in Johor early this morning. The police officers were shot and hacked by the man, who was also killed, during the attack at 2:54 am. 

Johor police chief M. Kumar, was present at the scene and confirmed the incident, but didn’t provide any details.  

It’s been reported that Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain was on the way to the location. 

The Attackers Unveiled 

It is believed the attacker, a 34-year-old local, entered the police station at the Seri Alam district police headquarters wearing a mask shortly before 3 am. 

After entering the police station, the attacker used a parang to attack and kill one of two policemen at the duty counter. He snatched the victim’s service weapon and shot the other policeman multiple times.

A third policeman who was returning from a crime prevention patrol was also attacked. However, he managed to shoot and kill the attacker. 

The two police officers who tragically lost their lives have been identified as Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar and Constable Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said.  Their bodies were taken to the Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI), where the injured policeman is also receiving treatment.

Ahmad Azza suffered from head and neck injuries, which are believed to be from the parang attack, while Muhamad Syafiq had gunshot wounds to his body.

Investigators believed that there was a scuffle between the suspect and the police, as investigators found a Walther 9mm automatic pistol and a Heckler & Koch MP5 sub-machine gun belonging to the police from the scene.

Previous Similar Incident

The last time was in August 2017 when a police officer was brutally attacked at the Pinggiran USJ police station in Subang Jaya, Selangor

In that incident, Lance Corporal Valentino Mesa was found dead by his colleagues around 3.30 am when they returned from a routine patrol.

The deceased was attacked with a slashing to the head before being gunshot.

It’s believed that his assailant used Valentino’s own service weapon,  which was also a Walther 9mm automatic pistol, to shoot him.
