On April 25, a man who assaulted a Malaysian celebrity with an extendable baton during a fan meeting at the Singapore Expo in March 2023 was given a prison sentence of two years, four months, and two weeks.
Muhammad Nabil Rashid was driven to commit the crime because he believed that Ahmad Kamal Ahmad Adli, also known as Kamal Adli, had sexually assaulted one of Nabil’s female family members.
Situation
Nabil, a 34-year-old individual from Singapore, admitted to committing one charge of assault and two charges of using criminal force against another individual on January 31st.
Mr Ahmad, who is famous for his roles in the Malay-language horror film Niyang Rapik, action comedy film Abang Long Fadil, and various television shows, participated in a celebrity meet-and-greet session at a bazaar event held at the Singapore Expo on March 12, 2023. The event was promoted on social media, and Mr Ahmad himself shared about it on Instagram.
Nabil, who was convinced that the actor had harmed his relative, decided to attend the event and confront the actor upon seeing the advertisements. The court records did not specify the reason behind his strong emotions.
Nabil, equipped with an extendable baton, donned a cap and a face mask as he made his way to the Singapore Expo. He reached the venue just before 9.20 pm and immediately hailed Mr. Ahmad upon spotting him.
In court, Deputy Public Prosecutor Cheah Wenjie stated in January: “(The actor) believed that the accused wished to have a photo taken together, and thus, he walked towards the accused.
What happened there?
– The defendant proceeded to remove the extendable baton from his pocket, fully extended it, and struck (him) once on the crown of his head, once on the left side of his face, and once on his arm.
– Following that, Nabil lowered his face mask and grinned at Mr Ahmad before departing.
– Subsequently, Nabil was pursued by members of the public and the actor’s relatives, who managed to apprehend him.
– Nabil was then taken into custody by law enforcement officers.
– The victim was immediately taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
According to a Police report
Following the arrest, Nabil was taken into custody by the police, and both suspects were later escorted to Changi General Hospital (CGH) for further evaluation.
Mr Ahmad sustained injuries to his face, requiring four stitches, after encountering Nabil at CGH around 11 pm. During the incident, Mr Ahmad was in a wheelchair when Nabil spat at him.
Nabil was placed in the Institute of Mental Health after the assault occurred. After evaluating him, a psychiatrist named Dr. Cheow Enquan concluded that Nabil had a psychiatric illness, possibly a delusional disorder, and also exhibited signs of antisocial personality disorder.
Dr. Cheow Enquan noted that despite these conditions, Nabil was mentally sound at the time of the attack and fully aware that his actions were incorrect.
Dr. Cheow’s report indicated that the assailant was not acquainted with Mr. Ahmad. The physician mentioned that Nabil seemed to have no understanding of his condition and consistently declined medication, despite numerous efforts to convince him otherwise.
