Johor, Malaysia: Police have arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly peeping at a woman in the restroom of a shopping mall.
Supt Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani, the Batu Pahat acting OCPD, said the incident took place at a shopping mall located on Jalan Flora Utama around 12:30 pm on Thursday, June 13.
“The 28-year-old victim was using the restroom when she noticed the suspect in the adjacent stall, peering from beneath the divider,” Shahrulanuar stated in a press release on Friday, June 14.
The woman reacted quickly, screamed for help and sprayed the suspect in the face with a toilet hose. Her cries for help attracted the attention of mall security personnel, who quickly arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect, who had tried to hide in a nearby toilet kiosk.
Following the incident, mall security reached out to the police to report the matter. “The suspect has been remanded for four days, until June 17, as we investigate under Section 377D of the Penal Code, which addresses acts of gross indecency,” Shahrulanuar added. If found guilty, the suspect could face a prison sentence of up to two years.
The incident quickly went viral on social media, and a video circulated showing the security guard reprimanding the suspect in the washroom. The clips have sparked widespread debate and concern about safety and privacy in public restrooms.
Police assured the public that they are taking this matter seriously and are committed to ensuring the safety of visitors to the mall. They encouraged anyone who has experienced similar incidents to come forward and report them.
This case highlights the importance of vigilance and the need to act immediately in these types of situations. The victim’s quick thinking and the quick response of the mall’s security team were key to apprehending the suspect and preventing further emergencies.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident to ensure justice is served and reinforce the message that such behaviour will not be tolerated. The public is reminded to pay close attention to their surroundings and immediately report any suspicious activity to security personnel or local authorities.
