ALOR GAJAH, May 21: Lottery Fraud: A housewife lost her jewellery worth about RM20,000 she was cheated with a promise of getting a 10 per cent commission for helping a foreigner claim the prize for a winning lottery result.
Supt Ashari Abu Samah, the Alor Gajah district police chief, said the incident took place last Saturday. The victim, 58, was approached by three men and a woman at a supermarket in Masjid Tanah in Alor Gajah. They are believed to be Indonesians between the age of 40 and 50.
Lottery Fraud: How The Victim Was Cheated?
Abu Samah said the suspects told the woman that they had won the first prize of RM500,000 but could not claim it as they didn’t have an identity card. They then offered RM50,000 to the victim asking her to help them claim the lottery prize. The victim agreed and went with the suspects to a lottery shop, about two kilometres from the supermarket, in a car.
“In the car, the suspects asked the victim to hand them her jewellery as collateral so that she would not run away after claiming the prize money,” he said in a statement.
The victim handed them over her necklace along with a pendant and a bangle worth RM20,000 and then got down from the car with the alleged winning ticket.
“When entering the shop, the victim turned to look at the suspects but found them and the car no longer there.
“Realising that she had been cheated, the woman then lodged a report at the Kuala Sungai Baru police station at about 2 pm on the day of the incident,” he said.
