Flash Floods Submerge

IPOH – A relentless downpour in the early hours today triggered flash floods across Perak’s Kinta and Manjung districts, leaving 69 homes waterlogged and families scrambling for safety. In Manjung, the chaos began around 1 AM as torrential rain collided with high tide, inundating parts of Pangkor Island and swamping 15 houses.

“We woke up to knee-deep water – our furniture floating,” shared a shaken resident of Kampung Teluk Kechil, one of the worst-hit areas. By 10:30 AM, 39 victims had sought temporary refuge at mosques and suraus, though no formal evacuation centers were opened.

The disaster secretariat confirmed flooding in multiple neighborhoods, including Kampung Masjid and Taman Pangkor Indah. While waters receded in Sitiawan’s Taman Hijau and Taman Sri Mawar by morning, 12 homes in Tronoh (Kinta district) remained flooded after the Bangkong River overflowed its banks.

Local authorities and the Civil Defence Force (APM) worked tirelessly to assess damage, though frustration brewed among residents. “This happens too often – when will there be proper drainage?” questioned a father in Segari, where 9 homes were damaged.

In Pangkor, two houses in Kampung Padang Tembak were submerged, while rising tides near Teluk Bharu left families stranded until daylight. No injuries were reported, but the emotional toll was clear. “We’ve lost school supplies, documents… how do we recover?” sighed a mother at Al-Amir Surau shelter.

As skies remained gloomy, officials urged vigilance with more rain forecast. Community volunteers distributed food packs, while social media buzzed with calls for long-term flood solutions.
