Zhang Zhi Jie Passes Away: Chinese Badminton Player Dies After Collapsing On Court

Zhang Zhi Jie Passes Away: A 17-year-old Chinese player passed away during an international tournament in Yogyakarta after collapsing on the court, badminton officials said Monday. Zhang Zhijie fell ill on Sunday night during a match against Japan’s Kazuma Kawano at the Asian Junior Mixed Team Badminton Championships.

When the score was 11-11 in the first game, Zhang suddenly fell to the ground. A doctor and medical team quickly arrived and within minutes he was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, where he died.

“Chinese player Zhang Zhijie collapsed on the court during a night match,” Badminton Asia and the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) said in a joint statement on Monday.

“He was sent to the hospital where he passed away at 23:20 local time yesterday. He was attended to by the tournament doctor and medical team. He was taken in the standby ambulance in less than two minutes and sent to hospital.”

“Badminton Asia, PBSI and the organising committee are immensely saddened and expressed their deepest condolences to Zhang’s parents, family, and the Chinese Badminton Association.”

“The world of badminton has lost a talented player,” the statement added.

The tournament’s team event began on June 28 and will continue until July 2. The competition continues with the individual category from July 3 to 7.
