SFA Recalls Additional Batches Of Chinese Roasted Walnut Product

SINGAPORE: The authorities of SFA (Singapore Food Agency) are recalling more batches of walnuts from China after discovering they contain excessive levels of a food additive called acesulfame-K. On 6th June (Thursday), the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) announced that the affected product, Xiyuguoyuan Xinjiang Paper Roasted Walnut, also contained another type of food additive called cyclamate.

The affected 500g and 1kg products were produced on March 24, 2024, and March 25, 2024, respectively.
SFA has instructed the importer, Hong Xin Da, to retrieve the products that have been identified as affected to remove the potentially unsafe or non-compliant products from the market and ensure the safety of consumers.

The recall is still ongoing. On 24th May, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) had already issued an order to recall the same products.

Regulatory Guidelines By SFA

Both cyclamate and acesulfame-K are permitted food additives that are used as artificial sweeteners and they have been approved for use in specific food products, including soft drinks and canned fruits, by regulatory authorities. However, cyclamate is currently prohibited from use in walnuts, as well as, other nut and seed products.

As stated in the Singapore Food Regulations, the use of acesulfame-K is approved for use in nuts and seeds products but restricted on the extent or quantity to which it can be used.
While there are no immediate health risks associated with consuming walnuts and other nuts and seeds products containing cyclamate and acesulfame-K, it’s not advisable to consume them excessively over an extended period.

SFA stated that it is actively conducting tests of nuts and seeds products as a part of a precautionary measure in Singapore. If any products are found to contain either unauthorized sweeteners or exceed the permitted levels, recalls will be ordered.

“Consumers who have consumed the implicated products and have concerns about their health should seek medical advice,” said SFA, adding that they can contact the retailers they purchased the products from if they have any inquiries.
