Singapore will have a new Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, from May 15. Lawrence Wong will take over the role of the present prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong. This change is part of a planned shift in leadership to the new team, often called the 4th generation or 4G political team.
Lawrence Wong has been involved in politics for a very long time and will officially become the Prime Minister during a ceremony at 8 p.m. on May 15 at the Istana.
Becoming the top choice for Prime Minister of Singapore, Lawrence Wong serves as the Finance Minister and gained good recognition during the COVID-19 pandemic by serving as a leader of the government’s response team.
Leadership Transition and Preparations for Future Challenges
The change was decided after Deputy Prime Minister Heng Sweeri Keat stepped down last year and opened the way for younger generation leaders.
Wong’s leadership skills were particularly noted during COVID-19, where he was seen frequently at press conferences and was praised for his clear communication and emotional speeches for country people.
Prime Minister Lee has encouraged the people of Singapore to support Lawrence Wong and his team as they take on more responsibilities for the country and introduce new policies, including unemployment assistance.
Wong will also soon prepare his party for the next general election, which may be held by November 2024.
At the biennial PAP Convention head at the Singapore Expo in November last year, Lee made it clear that he wanted to hand over to Lawrence Wong before the next general election, due by November 2025.
