DPM Wong Emphasizes Singapore's Support Amidst US-China Tensions.

SINGAPORE-Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the need for Singapore to prepare for a period of uncertainty that could last for several years or even longer, as the United States and China work towards finding a new balance in their relationship. Singapore should focus on guiding global affairs towards peaceful outcomes, rather than conflict.

During an interview with The Economist magazine on May 6, DPM Wong emphasized that Singapore is not taking sides between China and America but is focused on being “pro-Singapore”.

Wong’s Highlights

DPM Wong highlighted that the global order is shifting, leading to a messy transition as America’s unipolar dominance ends, yet still holds a significant position in a world with multiple major powers.

The US is perceived by China as attempting to restrict, surround, and stifle them, as well as prevent them from achieving their rightful global position, according to a statement from the Ministry of Communications and Information on May 8.

Deputy Prime Minister Wong highlighted that it is not only the leadership but also many Chinese officials who share this perspective, as he prepares to assume the role of Singapore’s fourth prime minister on May 15.

He mentioned a perceived containment against China and the expectation of opposite reactions to actions taken.

DPM Wong discussed the potential impact of American tech sanctions on Singapore and the possibility of a split in technology systems due to sensitive technologies held by American companies in the country.

Singapore export companies.

Singapore anticipates full compliance from these companies regarding export restrictions, while also emphasizing the importance of carefully calibrated restrictions. The speaker highlighted the negative impact a technological divide would have on Singapore, the US, and the global community, emphasizing the complexities of using economic and financial tools for geopolitical purposes compared to conventional warfare considerations such as collateral damage, retaliation, and escalation.

He expressed concerns about the lack of experience in dealing with it, emphasizing the potential profound implications for both the global economy and global stability if not handled carefully.

When questioned about the US government’s choice to pursue a modification in the identity and ownership of TikTok, a company based in Singapore, Deputy Prime Minister Wong stated that it is within America’s authority to determine the approach towards the social media platform.

He mentioned that social media companies from all countries are present in Singapore, but from their perspective, it does not pose a national security threat as far as social media is concerned.

The Republic plans to enhance the system by collaborating with similar nations, as mentioned by the official.

Despite challenges at the World Trade Organisation, Singapore has successfully joined the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, a major free trade agreement based on GDP.
