Diver Dies After Entangling in Boat Propeller, MOM Investigating

SINGAPORE: A 22-year-old diver died after getting entangled with a boat propeller at the eastern anchorage off East Coast. on June 18th (Tuesday) around 2.10 pm.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) on Wednesday (Jun 19) said, “A 22-year-old Malaysian worker was performing hull cleaning works for a ship when he got entangled with one of the propellers of the supporting dive boat.”

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it was notified of an emergency at around 2:15 in the afternoon. The injured diver was then taken to Singapore General Hospital for further medical treatment but, he did not survive and died from the injuries he had sustained.

The police stated based on preliminary investigations, that no suspicious circumstances is suspected and that investigations are still ongoing.

MOM Urges Divers To Follow Safety Guidelines

As a general safety measure, MOM highlighted that divers must stick to specific safety guidelines such as surface-supplied diving equipment or commercial self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (CSCUBA) to stay safe.

“Such equipment and apparatus facilitate coordination and communication between divers and supervisors during operations. Recreational SCUBA must not be used for commercial diving operations,” said MOM (Ministry of Manpower) Additionally, the Manpower Ministry has ordered the company to pause all diving activities.
