JOHOR BARU, Malaysia: Two police officers lost their lives in an early morning attack on the Ulu Tiram police station, while the suspect was also shot dead by the cops. Two university students were also arrested in connection with the incident. Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, Inspector-General of Police, said a male, 22, and a female student, 21, were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the attack.

“They were detained for further investigation related to the attack. It is illogical to report a molest case from two years ago at 2.30am in the morning. Therefore, we will thoroughly investigate these two students,” he said.

Ulu Tiram attack: A timeline

Here is the chronology of the Ulu Tiram police station attack at 2.54am.

02:30: Two students, a male and a female, arrived at the police station to lodge a complaint about an incident of alleged harassment that occurred two years ago.

02:35: While the two students were filing their complaint, a suspect entered the police station area on a motorcycle and continued to the back of the police station.

The suspect attacked and killed a police officer who went to the back of the police station to investigate. The suspect then confiscated his firearm.

Alerted by the attack, two other police officers rushed to the back of the police station to investigate and engaged in a shootout with the suspect.

02:54: The suspect shoots one of the police officers in the cheek. Another, although wounded, managed to shoot and kill the suspect.

Later, the suspect was identified as a member of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) group and it is believed he was attempting to confiscate firearms at the police station.

It was revealed that the suspect was well prepared for the fight with the police and that he was carrying a bag containing protective equipment with zinc, paper and cloth.

– 6.00am: Police later stormed the suspect’s family home in Ulu Tiram. Five family members, aged between 19 and 62, believed to be JI members, were arrested.

6:00 a.m.: Police went to the suspect’s family in Ulu Tiram and arrested five relatives between 19 and 62 years old, suspected of being members of JI.

The two students suspected of being involved in the attack were detained for questioning.
