KOTA KINABALU: A supermarket in Sandakan district on Sabah’s east coast was found to be storing halal-certified products as well as pork in its cold storage room.
The operation was conducted jointly by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and the Sabah State Veterinary Authority at around 10.50 am on Thursday, June 27.
Azdy Zukkry John, the chief enforcement officer at the Sandakan Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, said they searched the outlet after receiving a tip-off from the public.
“After checking its cold room, we found halal products such as chicken nuggets, cheese, butter, and fruits stored together with pork,” he said in a statement.

Azdy said the matter was being investigated in accordance with the Trade Descriptions Order (Halal Definition) 2011.
Under the regulations, a company found guilty could be fined up to RM5 million for a first offence and up to RM10 million for a second or subsequent offence.
“The Sandakan Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry will continue to observe and conduct checks on business premises that sell frozen products to ensure traders abide by the law,” he said.
