On Thursday, April 25, the Sabah Legislative Assembly approved three Bills during its final meeting. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor presented the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) Enactment 2024 and the Energy Commission of Sabah Enactment (Amendment No. 2) 2024 for consideration.
The Syariah Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Enactment 2024 was presented by Datuk Ariffin Arif, the Minister of State for Science, Technology, and Innovation. Hajiji stated that these energy Bills will enable Sabah to regain its regulatory authority over the power supply in the state.
Hajiji emphasised that the Energy Commission Enactment aims to expand the scope of “renewable energy” by including ocean thermal sources. This revision is a significant step towards establishing a new sustainable energy source in the state, aligning with the key objectives of the Blue Economy framework.
