With Israel’s war on Gaza escalating, the world is witnessing an increasing death toll and devastation. Citicizing international responses, Malaysia has questioned the role of the United States and other world powers in promoting peace or inciting conflict.
In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim opened up on pressing issues and called for a focus on humanity and global condemnation of what is increasingly seen as genocide.
Citing Gaza genocide concerns, Anwar Ibrahim also urged the US to cease arms supply to Israel.
Here’s what he said during the interview:
“Looking at the facts and the disastrous consequences in Gaza, no one in the right mind could deny the fact that it’s either ethnic cleansing or gross aplite or genocide. Look at the casualties, devastation and giving no opportunity for anyone- children, women and the elderly to survive. What other terms (than genocide) can be applicable?”
“I think the international community made very clear that authorities and governments including the United States should do whatever it can. First just complete secession of hostilities and stop the war. Such a rhetoric is quite acceptable at times but the action seems to be on the contrary. That is why I see sometimes most countries in the West seem to be quite hypocritical between the lectures on human rights and democracy while at the same time condoning if not tolerating these obvious atrocities against the innocent population.”
“They (US) should do whatever is necessary to stop the hostilities and there should be an end of that includes not only weapons but also they have the influence and mechanism and the diplomatic skills and all combined to be able to force I mean it’s just impossible to imagine that one man – Netanyahu – can dictate the affairs of the world.”
“I am in no position to deny that (the US is risking complicity in Israeli atrocities by continuing to supply weapons and diplomatic cover) because the facts are evident knowing atrocities have been committed whether it’s your ally, your friend or a nation that have a nexus with you, you cannot condone this. Otherwise, you have no moral stature or standing in the world to talk about international relations or humanity or order and human rights.”
