Malaysia Gears Up for La Nina: What Measures are Being Taken to Prepare for Potential Impacts?

PORT KLANG: The Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES) is preparing for the possible impacts of the upcoming La Nina phenomenon expected to hit the country between July and September.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), an agency of the NRES, would closely monitor and update national weather conditions, minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said.

La Nina: Preparation Measures

“We are preparing to face the La Nina phenomenon starting next month, with inter-ministerial cooperation involving the Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) Ministry and the Housing and Local Government Ministry,” he said at a press conference following a visit to Port Klang.

“This collaboration is crucial to manage increased rainfall, especially following previous periods of heat and dryness. Under my ministry, MetMalaysia will provide full cooperation in preparing for this phenomenon,” he added.

La Nina Announcement

MetMalaysia announced on June 9 that the upcoming phenomenon, known for its generally wetter weather conditions, is expected to arrive between July and September.

According to Muhammad Helmi Abdullah, MetMalaysia’s director-general, the phenomenon usually peaks at the end of the year and continues into the following year.

Furthermore, he said that the phenomenon’s episodes can last from five to 18 months. According to international forecast models, the upcoming La Nina is expected to be weak to moderately strong.

Monitoring and Updates

Muhammad Helmi, however, highlighted that each episode is unique and can produce different results.

MetMalaysia will continue to closely monitor the situation and update national weather information based on the latest data from various weather models.
