MAHB Deal: Did PM Anwar Lie To Parliament? Asks Pagoh MP Muhyiddin

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has questioned whether Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim lied to Parliament over (Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad) MAHB Deal.

The Pagoh MP said Anwar told the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday that Hamas had no problem selling shares in MAHB to Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP).

Blackrock, a US-based company believed to have financed Israel, is set to take over GIP.

Furthermore, Muhyiddin said that the Palestinian political party, however, said otherwise in a statement released the next day.

MAHB Deal: What Did Muhyiddin Say In Facebook Post?

“Anwar said at the Parliament that those who are against the selling of MAHB stakes to GIP are more Hamas than Hamas. He said that Hamas itself did not have any problem (with the deal). (However), Hamas later issued a statement stating that it supports all boycott actions against Israel. So, did the prime minister lie in the Parliament?” Muhyiddin asked on Facebook.

Controversy Over the Consortium

On May 15, Khazanah Nasional Berhad announced that the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and GIP would form a consortium through GIP Aurea Pte Ltd to acquire shares in the airport operator, sparking a major controversy.

The decision drew flak from various quarters after it was discovered that Blackrock, a company with alleged ties to Israel, was going to acquire GIP.

PM Anwar’s Defense

Defending the move, PM Anwar said Malaysia’s economy would be hurt if it severed ties with all companies linked to Israel.

On Tuesday, he also told the Parliament that while it seemed good to cut off all transactions with companies linked to Israel, such a move was unrealistic.

According to Dewan Rakyat Hansard, PM Anwar said that Hamas leaders never mentioned the MAHB deal during his recent meeting with them.

MAHB Deal: Anwar’s Statement

“It may sound good (to cancel ties with all Israel-linked companies) like we are the champion of the issue, but this is actually unrealistic. I had a discussion with Hamas leaders, and (this matter) was never raised. But there are some people who want to be more Hamas than Hamas. This is our problem,” he was recorded as saying.
