Is the Media Ready to Tackle Sensitive 3R Topics with Care? PM Anwar's Take

Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has cautioned journalists against making offensive comments when writing about 3R issues (Royalty, Race and Religion).

Anwar said there was never any intention to prevent media practitioners from expressing their views on the government, but he also highlighted the potential dangers that careless or offensive comments in these areas could pose to national unity.

Anwar’s Message: Proceed with Caution

“We can already discuss issues of race, religion, and royalty but we cannot use those issues in ways that can divide and harm us,” he said this at the MPI-Petronas Malaysian Journalism Awards 2023 ceremony in Kuala Lumpur.

“I want to clarify that there has never been any discussion within the government and among colleagues in the cabinet to urge for or take control over the freedom of journalists and media practitioners in giving their views, comments, and criticisms,” he added.

Balancing Freedom and Responsibility

The prime minister called on media practitioners to address 3R issues with care and respect, hoping to create a media environment that fosters national unity instead of division.

Anwar expressed his strong belief that Malaysia has the potential to become a beacon of greatness and strength on the global stage.

Malaysia’s Path to Greatness

This is the case if the nation is committed to the goals of peace, economic prosperity, cultural enrichment, religious harmony and digital progress.

However, he warned against succumbing to the traps of divisive controversies and urged Malaysians to stay away from issues that threaten to break our unity.

Journalists’ Role in Unity

Anwar also stressed the importance of avoiding ignorance and arrogance, recognising that such attitudes can potentially undermine the essence of our humanity.

Highlighting the crucial role played by media professionals in promoting national unity, he said journalists have an important responsibility in shaping public opinion and ensuring a balanced and respectful discourse.

“How do we evaluate a successful journalist? They work with confidence and have passion in their profession,” he added.
