Flood In Penampang District: State of Disaster Declared

A state of disaster was declared in Penampang around 6pm last evening. This is the second-worst flooding in Penampang in almost three years.

The incessant rains that began yesterday around 1:00 pm caused flash flooding around 5:00 pm in several districts including Penampang, Telipok and Sipitang.

The high tide phenomenon, which occurred around 4:00 pm, further aggravated the problem by blocking the flow of rainwater towards the sea in local waterways.

The state Public Works Department rendered several major roads impassable. Two roads between Keningau and Tenom and one between Penampang and Tambunan were closed to traffic following the incident, and the department reported several landslides along these roads.
