Ampang Jaya: Boy, 11, Disabled After Teacher Forces Him To Stand Under The Sun For Three Hours

An 11-year-old student in Ampang Jaya was rushed to a hospital for suffering heat stroke after he was punished by his teacher, who made him stand under the sun for more than 2 hours (10am to 12:50pm on April 30).

The mother of the Standard 5 pupil said that her son was allegedly punished after he told his teacher that another student had beaten him. The child is now classified as disabled.

‘He is now not normal’, says mother

The condition of the child has changed drastically, affecting his nerves and his overall health.

His mother, A.D. Mogahana Selvi, 35, revealed that Ampang Hospital had issued a letter of reference for her son to be officially classified as a PwD (Person with Disability) as he now has persistent health problems.

“To be honest, I feel upset when I see my child’s condition as he is now not normal. Previously, he used to play often with his siblings, but now he hides a lot and talks to himself,” she said.

The hospital informed Mogahana that her son could no longer attend regular school due to his health condition and would have to be enrolled in a school for children with special needs, NST reported.

‘We want the teacher involved to be charged in court‘

She was accompanied at the press conference by her husband B Suresh, 40, their lawyer Dinesh Muthal and Malaysia-Singapore Workers Task Force (Pemas) president S Dayalan.

Dinesh Muthal announced their intention to file a civil suit against those responsible for the incident.

“This incident has caused a lot of stress to the victim’s parents, especially Mogahana who is three months into a pregnancy. They now have to come to terms with the fact that their son will never lead a normal life. Apart from a civil suit, we want the teacher involved to be charged in court and be given an appropriate sentence if found guilty,” he stated.

Authorities and school’s response ‘unsatisfactory’

S Dayalan criticized the investigation by the authorities and the school’s response to the incident as “unsatisfactory.”

He also noted that the school sent three warning letters to the boy’s parents about his absence between May 2 and 23, but he never spoke about the incident in which he was forced to stand in the sun.

The child was taken to hospital after being exposed to the sun between 10:00am and 12:50 pm.

Mohd Azam Ismail, the Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner, confirmed that the police had completed their investigation and handed over the documents to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.
