International Yoga Day 2024: Meet 5 Inspiring Malaysian Yoga Influencers on Instagram

International Yoga Day 2024: The art and practice of yoga is said to originate at the dawn of civilisation, and the science of yoga has its roots in a history dating back thousands of years, long before the birth of the first religions or belief systems. In addition to building muscle strength, increasing blood circulation, improving flexibility, preventing illness, and relieving pain, it also provides benefits beyond the mat.

On International Yoga Day 2024, here’s a look at five Malaysian yoga influencers on Instagram who are inspiring people to find balance and seek inner peace in their body, mind and soul through this practice.

1. Jojo Struys

Jojo Struys is the founder of co-healing space OhanaJo, one of the largest yoga and sound healing studios in Malaysia. Struys earned fame as a regional television presenter before becoming a wellness speaker and yoga instructor. She practised yoga training and pranayama breathing techniques in the foothills of the Himalayas for 20 years and attended daily 14-hour sessions at an ashram in Rishikesh, India, before becoming a fully certified yoga teacher.

In addition to sharing tips and experiences from her daily yoga sessions, she also leads classes, special meditations, and sound baths at OhanaJo.

2. Edward Chung

Edward Chung is an accountant by profession and is also a certified yoga teacher by pure passion. He wants to inspire others to set long-term health and fitness goals because he knows that the beauty of yoga lies in unleashing your potential and empowerment. He uses his social media handle to help aspiring yogis get started in the practice by sharing videos and proper alignments and techniques to get the body moving.

Chung is one of the few male practitioners in Malaysia and is known for his strong, creative and interesting sequences. He has been teaching since 2018 and now also leads virtual and in-person private or group classes at Yoga Moment.

3. Datin Dian Lee

Datin Dian Lee, film producer and director, real estate developer, retreat owner and mother of three, believes in sharing love through the divine practice of yoga. In 2016, Lee felt the need for deeper meaning and purpose and began yoga teacher training in Bali with Tara Judelle, which gave Dian a new perspective on life and inspired her to begin her journey toward “conscious evolution.” She also graduated from The Sacred Science of Sound in Los Angeles and is mentored by Professor Jeralyn Glass in sound healing with Crystal Alchemy.

In addition to sharing snippets of her family life and being a popular activist on Instagram, she also inspires her followers to find peace and self-love and build a positive relationship with themselves.

4. Hansen Lee

As an established actor, television host, emcee, and movement trainer with over 20 years of experience, Hansen Lee firmly believes that yoga is not only a practice but also a way of living and being, and he has learned from some of the best teachers. For beginners, he says, “It’s totally okay to not know exactly how each pose or movement should be done, a lot of the benefits really come from figuring it out As long you are practising with a sense of mindfulness, attention and kindness towards yourself, your practice will grow and it will be uniquely yours.”

Currently, he takes yoga classes for Hatha Yoga, Hatha Vinyasa and Power Yoga at Ommosapiens.

5. Rin Zheng

Rin Zheng is a schoolteacher turned fashion designer turned yoga instructor. The graduate in Physical Education and Sports Sciences discovered yoga as a form of stretching about 20 years ago, but only recently did she begin to practice it more constantly and consciously. Through Instagram, she transmits the benefits of physical practice to make it accessible to everyone. Zheng also teaches Karma Yoga, 1EarthYoga, and Under The Light.
