Singapore News: 2 People Hospitalized Due to Underarm Whitening and Weight Loss Products

SINGAPORE: Three people have experienced adverse effects after using adulterated health products including underarm whitening and weight loss products with two of them hospitalised, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said on June 28th, Friday.

During analysis by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA), 88 Total White Underarm creams were found to have a high mercury level and two other potent ingredients, while Sausando Cellulite Pills contained a banned substance.

Mercury is a toxic heavy metal and is prohibited for use in cosmetic products.

Health Complications Arise From Use Of Pills

After a month of using 88 Total White Underarm Cream, A woman in her 30s was admitted to the hospital which she had bought at Lucky Plaza. She developed a severe rash and experienced liver impairment, including elevated liver enzymes and jaundice.

The cream was promoted to have the ability to whiten and smooth skin as well as reduce body odour.
Likewise, A man in his 50s, who had been consuming the Sausando Cellulite Pills for five months, experienced seizures, low sodium levels in the blood, and vomiting while a woman who consumed the same product experienced thirst, insomnia, and heart palpitations.

The product contained sibutramine, a prescription-only weight loss medicine banned in Singapore in 2010 due to its association with an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Other serious health risks linked to its usage include heart problems and central nervous system disorders.

HSA has confiscated all stocks of the cream from the retail shop in Lucky Plaza and is collaborating with e-commerce platforms to remove listings. Enforcement actions will be taken against the online sellers.
