Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said that Malaysia will soon begin formal procedures to join the BRICS geopolitical bloc.
“We have already explained our policy and made our decision. We will begin formal procedures soon,” Anwar said in an interview with Chinese news channel Guancha founder Li Shimo when asked when Malaysia plans to join, according to Sputniknews.
Established in 2009 as a cooperation platform for the largest emerging economies, BRICS initially brought together Brazil, Russia, India and China.
The BRICS nations act as an organisation that seeks to promote economic cooperation between member countries and strengthen their economic and political position in the world.
The founding countries have been among the fastest-growing market economies in the world for years.
South Africa joined the group in 2010. Russia took over the bloc’s rotating presidency on January 1. On the same day, BRICS expanded its membership to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
