Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim made a surprise visit to Penang International Airport. During his visit, he emphasised the crucial role of integrity and discipline for immigration and customs personnel. In his recent Facebook post, Anwar underscored the importance of performing duties diligently and ethically, particularly for officers within the immigration and customs departments.

Addressing Misconduct Concerns

During his visit, Anwar stressed the importance of all personnel to uphold high standards of conduct to prevent any potential financial losses to the country due to misconduct. His remarks follow revelations by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief Azam Baki regarding significant revenue losses, estimated at RM2 billion since 2017, attributed to a smuggling syndicate operating at the KLIA Cargo terminal in Sepang.

Crackdown on Corruption

MACC Commission Chief Azam Baki revealed that authorities apprehended 34 customs officers between March 11 and 25 for allegedly accepting bribes amounting to over RM4.7 million to facilitate the illegal entry of undeclared imports. The syndicate’s activities involve smuggling tobacco, cigarettes, alcohol, health products, and vehicle spare parts. Additionally, 27 individuals, including company owners, were arrested for their involvement in shielding and aiding the syndicate.

Ongoing Monitoring and Accountability

Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the need for heightened vigilance within agencies such as the immigration department and the Inland Revenue Board, underscoring ongoing efforts to combat corruption and malpractice.
