On April 24, US President Joe Biden signed a bill into law that could ban Chinese social media app TikTok. The law requires the app to either disassociate from its Chinese parent ByteDance or face a complete ban.

While the ban may still take years to come into effect, it has already infuriated the TikTok community. Many creators, having followed millions, have spoken against the law, accusing the government of ruining their livelihood.

Several innovators have recently journeyed to the Capitol to voice their opposition to the legislation and organize demonstrations.

Ophelia Nichols, also known as “shoelover99” on TikTok, expressed her concern by stating, “Our First Amendment rights are being infringed upon.” With a massive following of over 12.5 million followers, this TikToker has gained popularity for its engaging lifestyle content.

According to CNBC, Ophelia emphasized that TikTok provides a platform for small businesses and creators to connect with their target audience within their community.

She further explained that TikTok is not just a platform, but rather a close-knit community where individuals can find like-minded people who share their interests and passions. Ophelia believes that whatever brings joy or happiness to someone’s life, they can easily find others on the app who appreciate and love the same things.

Anti-Government Movement

A wave of activity has surged within the app, with creators sharing over 585,000 videos using the hashtags #KeepTikTok and #SaveTikTok.

Kahlil Greene, a TikTok user with over 650,000 followers known as the “Gen Z Historian,” pointed out the contradiction of the Biden administration endorsing a TikTok ban while utilizing the platform for campaign purposes.

The increasing popularity of TikTok among Americans signifies the acknowledgment and awareness of its significance in delivering news and entertainment, showcasing the understanding of its potential by its users and the individual behind it.

Creators are Powerful?

In the United States, the app boasts a whopping 170 million users. A recent study by the Pew Research Center revealed that approximately one-third of young adults under 30 in the US turn to TikTok for their news fix daily. This highlights the significant impact that TikTokers have on the American audience.

They Have No Plans to Sell the App

In a recent statement, ByteDance made it clear that they have no intentions of selling the app in the United States. TikTok’s CEO, Shou Chew, reassured users in a video response that the company is here to stay. He emphasized that they have the support of both the facts and the Constitution, and they anticipate a successful outcome. The video was shared on the X platform.
