SINGAPORE: A 16-year-old male teenager who reportedly evaded a police roadblock and tried to run away on foot after collapsing from his e-bike has been arrested, said police in a news release on June 3, Monday.
The incident occurred on May 25, when Traffic Police officers were conducting a roadblock along Guillemot Road at 2:55 am.
The police directed an e-bike rider, to stop for inspection as he was not wearing a helmet. But he failed to stop and drove off. “While doing so, he knocked down a police road barrier, fell off his e-bike, and continued to flee on foot,” said the police.
“After a brief chase, the officers detained and subsequently arrested him.”
According to the sources, the rider’s e-bike was assumed to be illegally modified and later seized by the Land Transport Authority. Police investigations revealed that the teenager possessed duty-unpaid contraband cigarettes at the time. Investigations are still ongoing.
An illegal act like evasion of a roadblock carries a penalty of up to S$10,000, a jail term of up to seven years, or both.
The Crime of modifying an e-bike to be non-compliant carries a penalty of up to S$20,000, a jail term of up to 24 months, or both for first-time individual offenders.
For buying, selling, delivering, or possessing duty-unpaid cigarettes, criminals can be fined up to 40 times the amount of duty and Goods and Services Tax evaded, jailed for up to six years, or both.
