Mother of Two Toddlers Fined for Milk Powder Theft, Hid Loot Under Stroller

SINGAPORE – A woman, Chan Chu Yi, was accused of stealing two tins of milk powder worth nearly $280 from a Bukit Batok supermarket. She went to the supermarket with her two toddlers, aged two and three, where she was found hiding the loot under her stroller in June 2023.

Likewise, Lorraine and her husband, Lim Soon Leong, committed theft at a Jurong hypermarket by stealing 12 tins of milk powder valued at over $1,565 altogether at almost 4.30 pm on June 7, 2023. Later, Lim sold all 12 tins on the online marketplace Carousell for $1,170.

Lim Soon Leong, who was earlier convicted of multiple crimes, including theft, cheating, and traffic-related ones, was sentenced to 11 months in jail in May. He was also banned from obtaining all driving licences classes for three years from his release date.

On June 4th, Chan went to the Bukit Batok supermarket with the two toddlers at around 9.40 am, the State Prosecuting Officer (SPO), Augustine Arlando, stated in the court.

A supermarket’s manager made a police report on June 12 that year when the supermarket staff discovered the absence of items during a stock check five days later. Closed-circuit television footage revealed that Chan was involved in the theft.

The SPO said: “They placed the items in… three storage boxes and proceeded to pick up other items. When they went to the self-service payment kiosk of the hypermarket, they scanned and paid for all the items they had taken, except for the (tins of milk powder) which remained concealed in the three storage boxes.”

On June 13TH, Chan Chu Yi, 26, was fined $3,500 after she pleaded guilty to two theft charges.
