SINGAPORE – Singapore Airlines (SIA) has offered generous compensation i.e. US$10,000 (S$13,534) to passengers on board who suffered minor injuries during the turbulence-hit SQ321. On June 11th, the national carrier announced through a Facebook post those who had more serious injuries were invited to discuss compensation offers that would “meet their specific circumstances”.
it added that it has provided an advance payment of US$25,000 to passengers who suffered severe injuries that require long-term medical treatment and are requesting financial assistance. The payment is intended to meet their immediate needs and be part of the final compensation they receive.
SIA added that it would provide a full refund of the airfare to all passengers in addition to compensation, who were on the flight, and experienced “sudden extreme turbulence” over the Irrawaddy Basin in Myanmar as the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft made its way to Singapore from London on May 21.
During the turbulence-hit SQ321, a British passenger, Geoffrey Kitchen, 73, died of a suspected heart attack, while many passengers were injured. According to the sources, 211 passengers and 18 crew members were on board, and the injured people were taken to Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital, Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital, and Bangkok Hospital for treatment.
The passengers who are not injured will also be given a refund.
Singapore Airlines said, “All affected passengers should have received their offers of compensation via e-mail, along with information on how they may proceed with their claims,” the airline said.
