KUALA LUMPUR: The police are likely to make more arrests to assist in the investigation into the murder of autistic boy Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin in December 2023.
This development comes a day after the police arrested the parents of the 6-year-old boy on Friday and later remanded them in custody for seven days.
Zayn Rayyan Murder: Parents To Be Taken To Crime Scene
According to Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, the Selangor police chief, whether or not more people would be arrested would depend on the outcome of the police questioning of the parents, who could be taken to Idaman Apartments in Damansara Damai, where Zayn’s body was discovered.
“What the police manage to get out of the parents during questioning will determine whether we will need to go back to the location or if other arrests will be made,” Hussein told Scoop.
“Whether we’ll bring them both to Idaman Apartments or the location where the victim’s body was found to aid our investigation during the remand period also depends on the interrogation results.”
He also highlighted that the arrest of Zayn’s parents was to assist the police investigation.
Zayn Rayyan Was Found Dead A Day After He Went Missing
On Dec 5, 2023, Zayn’s mother reported him missing while they were returning to their home at Idaman Apartments. The next day, he was found dead near a stream, about 200 metres from his apartment building.
While the initial cause of his death was classified as sudden death, police later suspected murder after the post-mortem revealed injuries to the neck and body consistent with self-defence, which led to an investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
Police Never Stopped Probe
Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director, said in February that the police never stopped their investigation into the boy’s murder.
He added that despite the difficulties encountered during the investigation, including the main crime scene still to be located, the police were persistent and examined every piece of information received to solve the case.
What Did Parents’ Lawyer Say?
Meanwhile, the lawyer for Zayn’s parents said that his client’s “sudden” arrest was due to new developments in the investigation, including the discovery of new evidence.
