Tourism Minister Apologises Amid Backlash Over Deputy's Muslim-Niche Proposal For Langkawi

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing has tendered an apology for his deputy’s idea to turn Langkawi into a niche holiday destination for Muslims.

Apologising to the public, he said that Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan may not have explained the matter clearly.

Tourism Minister’s Apology and Explanation

“I was abroad on duty a few days ago, and the deputy minister might not have explained it clearly, which led to public backlash. I have already spoken to him about this,” Tiong (above) was quoted by the China Press during an event in Penang on Friday.

Stressing that Malaysia is a multiracial country, he said that no tourist site should be based solely on the needs of a single religion.

Meanwhile, Tiong said that now that there are direct flights between Shanghai and Penang, he hopes Penang residents will actively promote the state’s tourist attractions, including its cuisine.

He urged all industries in Penang to work together to maintain the sustainability of the state’s tourism industry.

Parliamentary Debate and Criticism

During Monday’s parliamentary session, Khairul defended the rights of states that impose conservative rules on tourists.

His remarks came after being asked to comment on states that prohibit tourists from consuming alcohol or wearing revealing clothing.

Responding to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok (Harapan-Seputeh), he said those states could serve niche markets.

Citing Langkawi, Khairul said the island could position itself as a destination for Muslim tourists.

His comments drew harsh criticism, with even Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor saying the state was not considering such an idea.
