KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim paid tribute to the late Syed Husin Ali, describing him as his friend, mentor and great teacher.
In his tribute posted on Facebook, Anwar, who is also the president of PKR, recalled the vast knowledge, valuable credentials and wisdom of the Deputy Chairman of the PKR Advisory Panel, which were evident in lectures when Syed Husin was a professor at the Universiti Malaya (UM).
Anwar said the legacy left by Syed Husin is immense and covers a wide spectrum, not only in the field of science but also as a social science icon, writer and thinker, which was evident when he shared his passion with the late National Laurette the late Datuk Usman Awang, by playing a leadership role as President of Persatuan Penulis Nasional Malaysia (PENA).
PM Anwar said Syed Husin was also a person who championed the cause of the poor, fought for the party, cemented his commitment to justice and battelled for the future of the country.
“Syed Husin was resilient in fighting for the poor, the supressed and an essential figure in our struggle for justice and deeply rooted in his socialist fight. He was steadfast at the forefront, especially when upholding the struggles of the people in towns, farmers in Baling, students who fought for the wellbeing of the people,” he said.
Anwar said Syed Husin was increasingly involved in politics from 1990 to 2003 as president of Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) and as co-founder and Deputy President of PKR, helping to strengthen the principles of justice to build a progressive Malaysia.
