Penang By-Election: Will Nurhidayah Che Rose Run Again? PKR Women Chief Ready To Contest Again

Penang, Malaysia: Nurhidayah Che Rose, the ex-Pakatan Harapan candidate for the Sungai Bakap state assembly seat, has expressed her willingness to run again if given the opportunity. Based on the allocation of seats in the 15th general election, Nurhidayah, 33, said the Sungai Bakap seat would be given to Harapan coalition candidates.

Nurhidayah Che Rose Ready for a Second Run

“God willing, I am ready to contest again to represent Harapan-BN if given the opportunity. It will be my chance to make up for my narrow defeat in last year’s state election However, the leadership will determine the candidate. I’ll leave it to the party and PKR president (Anwar Ibrahim),” the Penang PKR Women chief told Malaysiakini.

By-Election and Previous Results

The death of incumbent PAS’ Nor Zamri Latiff on 24 May triggered the Sungai Bakap by-election. Zamri won the seat with 15,433 votes, while Nurhidayah (above) received 13,870 votes, last year.

Sungai Bakap’s electorate at that time consisted 59.4 per cent Malay voters, 22.5 per cent of Chinese, 17.4 per cent Indians and 0.7 per cent of other races.

Focus on Young Voters and Future Plans

Nurhidayah also opened up on her previous defeat, saying party’s apparatus must focus on gaining the trust of young voters in the unity government. She was counting on young voters to contribute to her defeat.

“If given another chance, I will redouble my efforts and work harder than before, especially in building up the trust of young people. In addition, I am confident that the continuous work at the state assembly and Nibong Tebal Parliament level after Harapan-BN took power will add value to seize the seat from the opposition. At the Parliament and state assembly level, a lot of attention is given to solving the problems of the people here, especially involving the water supply,” she said.

Electoral Commission to Set Dates for Sungai Bakap By-Election

Sungai Bakap was the only seat in the Nibong Tebal constituency in the last state election and Perikatan Nasional claimed it, while the other two seats, Jawi and Sungai Acheh, were won by Harapan-BN candidates.

It was previously reported that the Electoral Commission would discuss the Sungai Bakap by-election June 6.

These meetings are usually organized to set important dates for the electoral process, including the date of the elections.
