Senate President Mutang Tagal Dies

The Office of Dewan Negara President’s Office confirmed his death news in a statement. They mentioned that they are gonna announce the details regarding Mutang’s funeral arrangements and the ceremony for the public to pay their last respects.

President Mutang Tagal lived with his family, his wife Ho May Leng and his three children. “His family wishes to convey their sincere thanks for the condolences, prayers, and support offered to them during this difficult time.” 

Reason Behind His Death

Mutang had fallen ill during his work visit that started on April 29 but he returned earlier than scheduled, he was in Azerbaijan when he fell sick and then he was brought back to Malaysia on May 6, to receive treatment at IJN. 

The Senate president had led a group of Malaysian delegations to attend the World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue in Baku from May 1 to 3.

On February 19, Mutang was appointed the 20th president of Dewan Negara, taking over from Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who relinquished the post following his appointment as the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak.

He made his electoral debut in the 1982 general election, representing Barisan Nasional (BN) to win the Bukit Mas federal seat. In 1986, he successfully defended the seat for a second term, defeating independent candidate Mohd Bujang Mohd Yassin by a majority of 5,863 votes.

Mutang made history as the first leader from the Lun Bawang ethnic group to be appointed as the Senate president.
