Malaysia Drops in World Press Freedom Index 2024: What Did PM Anwar Ibrahim Say?

Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim took to Twitter on Saturday to address concerns and affirm Malaysia’s relationship with China, emphasizing its foundation in mutual respect. “Many of my overseas friends question whether our enhanced bilateral relationship with China could disadvantage Malaysia, especially as we are a smaller nation. I assure that our relationship is rooted in mutual respect,” he stated.

PM Anwar Ibrahim highlighted historical precedents dating back to the emperors of China and the Sultans of Malacca, underscoring the potential for mutual benefit in the relationship between Malaysia and China.

“My discussions with Premier Li Qiang this week reaffirmed my belief in the friendly, courteous, and respectful nature of Chinese leadership towards Malaysia,” Anwar continued, reflecting on recent diplomatic engagements.

Despite external skepticism, particularly from Western quarters, PM Anwar Ibrahim expressed appreciation for the cultural understanding demonstrated by Chinese counterparts. “Throughout our discussions, there was no hint of arrogance or condescension.
